How to connect a microphone to a computer
In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to connect a microphone to your computer using an audio interface. Once your microphone is connected, you’ll be ready to record vocals with Mantra.
Overview
To record vocals on your computer, you’ll need a microphone and an audio interface. The audio interface allows you to connect your microphone and convert the signal into digital audio for your DAW and plugins like Mantra.
If you don’t have an audio interface yet, check out our guide on choosing an audio interface for recording vocals. If you’re still deciding on a microphone, see our guide on choosing a microphone for recording vocals.
This guide will walk you through how to connect your audio interface to your computer, connect your microphone, adjust input gain, and everything else you need to start recording vocals.
Step 1 - Connecting your audio interface to your computer
Most audio interfaces connect to your computer via USB or Thunderbolt. Use the cable that came with your interface and plug it into a free port on your computer.
Once connected:
Install any required drivers or control software from the manufacturer’s website (if needed).
Verify the interface is recognized by your system.
On macOS, go to System Settings > Sound.
On Windows, go to Settings > System > Sound.
The interface should appear as an input and output device.
If your interface isn’t detected, refer to the manufacturer’s installation instructions or troubleshooting guide.
Step 2 - Plugging in headphones and/or studio monitors
To monitor your recordings in real time, connect your headphones and/or studio monitors to the audio interface:
Headphones: Plug into the 1/4" headphone output, usually on the front.
Studio monitors: Connect to the left and right outputs on the back.
Check your interface’s manual if you’re unsure which outputs to use.
To avoid feedback during live monitoring, we recommend using headphones while tracking and studio monitors for mixing.

Step 3 - Connecting the microphone to the audio interface
To connect your microphone:
Plug an XLR cable into the microphone.
Plug the other end into the XLR mic input on your interface.
If you’re using a condenser microphone, ensure the input supports phantom power (+48V). Then enable it, usually with a button labeled +48V either on the interface or in its control software.

Step 4 - Setting the input type
Most interfaces automatically detect a microphone when an XLR cable is used. If your interface has manual input settings (mic, line, or instrument), make sure the input is set to mic.
Avoid using line or instrument, as these are intended for other signal types and may cause improper gain levels or unwanted noise.
Step 5 - Adjusting input gain
Correct input gain is key to clean recordings.
Enable phantom power if you’re using a condenser microphone.
While singing or speaking at your normal recording volume, turn the input gain knob on your interface and watch the signal indicator.
Aim for a strong signal without clipping (usually shown as a red light).
Fine-tune your input level using the Global Input Knob inside Mantra.
Avoid setting the gain too low which will result in a weak input signal, or too high which can clip and distort.
